This year’s SAP Solution Manager 7.2 Roadshow held in Oslo on June 20th was for the first time streamed as a live web event from the face to face event held at Coop Norway’s premises. We had a very experienced presenter, Wulff-Heinrich Knapp from the Solution Manager Product Team in Walldorf and this provided the opportunity to dig deeper into some of the new functionality in version 7.2. In addition, we also had the benefit of a user case presentation by Coop Norway on their recent upgrade to 7.2 and the experience they had gained from their project.

After positioning the Solution Manager product, Wulff explained the many benefits of 7.2 including new features and tools, which aid and assist in the transition to S/4 HANA. After that, we moved into the core session to look at the 7.2 functionality in some of the key areas of Solution Manager.

Some major takeaways from the event were:

  • There are currently 300 go lives globally every month to Solution Manager 7.2
  • For companies moving to an application landscape based on S/4 HANA, the Transformation Navigator seems to be a very useful tool
  • While it is hard to generalise on 7.2 upgrade durations the feeling is that it should not take longer than 4 months even for more complex upgrades (includes pre and post upgrade tasks) – Coop Norway used 3 months
  • SAP will not back down on their intention to discontinue normal support for version 7.1 from the end of this year which means customer specific maintenance for those who have not upgraded
  • SAP recommend customers to execute their upgrades to Solution Manager 7.2 and migration to SAP HANA in one go
  • A three tier landscape is now more common for Solution Manager and there are some key advantages over the two tier
  • A good tip for upgrading is to consolidate on 7.1 first and then decide what you need to move to 7.2

The SBN would like to thank Coop for the use of their superb facilities and especially Endre Rasmussen for arranging meals and refreshments.
